Beginning Guide to Meditation

Date January 23, 2008

The plan was to post a blog three times a week. Preferably on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Well this past Monday, I was absent from regular activities such as work and… being awake. I got knocked off my feet by a very strange cold. The fever came and went, borrowing its behavior from guerilla war tactics. I haven’t felt such lethargy since the last time I had pneumonia in 1994. I beat whatever it was in three days though! Lots of Traditional Medicinals Organic Echinacea Elder Tea! I don’t normally drink tea, but that tea tastes yummy, and helped my immune system. I am also very fortunate to have a sister who will make me delicious soup. I slept a great deal. And guess what else I did through stuffy nostrils and a serious lack of motivation? I cleansed my energy.

How do I cleanse my energy?

Meditation. Meditation is the practice of self guided relaxation of the body and calming of the mind. I want you to know that is what I mean whenever I use the word “meditation” (which I am growing tired of… hmm…synonyms?)

Synonyms for Meditation from Thesaurus.com include contemplation, concentration, deep thought, introspection, pondering, quiet time, reflection, rumination, self-examination. Well… you are not contemplating anything too complicated. It just takes focusing upon your thoughts and feelings and being honest with yourself. Eventually, you can quickly pinpoint what is troubling you. Then it is up to you to take action.

Here is what I do:

(Disclaimer: Although a disclaimer is somewhat unnecessary, you should remember that what you get from meditation depends upon you, and you alone. What works for me may not be right for you. My meditation practice has been developed by borrowing from a mixture of ideas and philosophies I have exposed myself to over many years, along with my own intuition. It has taken time to develop, tailored to my personal needs.)

  • Take Time: Give yourself time to learn about meditation. Give yourself time to get into it. Develop a meditation routine. It took months for me to remember to do it every day. Make breathing exercises a daily habit.

Here is a useful quote: “When the breath wanders the mind also is unsteady. But when the breath is calmed the mind too will be still, and the yogi achieves long life. Therefore, one should learn to control the breath.” Svatmarama, Hatha Yoga Pradipika

  • My Current Routine: Twenty minutes before bed. Twice daily would be better…
  • My Mixture: Is a combination of Grounding Energy, Chakra Breathing, Positive Affirmations, and Visiting my Sanctuary

I just realized each item in My Mixture needs a separate blog post. I can do that. But not today.

*In love and light*
