I am a Vegetarian

Date February 7, 2008

I have been thinking all week that I should write to you about meat.

Yes, meat. To hell with my proposed blogs about chakras and positive affirmations! Er… until after I satiate my urge to discuss meat, and why you shouldn’t eat the red kind (at least).

My desire to write about meat began when I read an article last week called Farming Should Return To Its Roots, which was sent to me by a friend who no longer eats red meat because of the knowledge I have bestowed upon him. The article I just linked to isn’t about not eating meat, but may cause you to question where and how those juicy slabs end up on your pristine dinner plate, and what sort of meat you are actually ingesting.

Perhaps you are ready to consider being dissuaded from eating a bloody mess of muscle torn from the body of a kind creature who spent life unable to graze, trapped in close quarters with thousands of other doomed animals, eating genetically modified grains, being injected with antibiotic cocktails, who is then savagely killed just so you can have an overdose of protein, and other goodies like cholesterol and fat. Mmm! Yummy!

I will now take this moment to explain what is obvious to the smart people: I am a Vegetarian. All the non-believers ask me year after year how I haven’t died yet. It’s quite miraculous actually. I don’t let meat decay in my intestines anymore. I eat fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and whole grains. I know, not a new concept. In fact, it is so Not New I can say that the first humans had a mostly, if not entirely, vegetarian diet. There is quite a debate surrounding this topic. Here is a short article about it called The Diet of Early Humans.

I will continue with this topic tomorrow as I have run out of time. I want to do a little bit of research for My Reasons for Not Eating Red Meat. I already did a lot of reading years ago, but perhaps I can direct you to more information besides sharing my own personal experience. I will get back to writing on meditation in the near future.
