Clearing the Clutter
April 29, 2008
Despite the fact that spring has sprung and might die tonight in an unexpected cold snap… it’s definitely time for Spring Cleaning. I tried to begin cleaning my sun porch two weeks ago, and then all of this fabulously, gorgeous weather happened. I also went to a fabulous Bachelorette Party this past weekend. Needless to say, the room is still in disarray.
I hang on to way too many Things. I am sure I am not alone in this. It all becomes mental baggage, besides being physical lumps of junk that I only look at when I am “cleaning”. I become nostalgic, or start to believe that I might actually do something with that piece of paper I doodled on once. Then comes the fatigue. Sitting for hours straight, accomplishing… nothing.
I have to realize, once and for all, that I cannot expect anyone else will want to deal with my scraps of paper, old birthday cards, box of poems about breakups, old photos, Absolut ads I collected in high school, trinkets, old calendars and planners… Why do I keep all of this Stuff?!?! It’s frustrating, but apparently not enough. I still have it. It’s been a year since I moved into this place. Have I mentioned that it’s such a relief to not be moving for the first time since 1999? I can focus on the nitty gritty now. I have to get rid of all that old junk mail and the multitude of pay stubs before I lose my mind.
It is true. Physical clutter becomes mental muck.
What is my course of action going to be…?
I will have to let you know how things go.

[...] Well, I finally got around to it in November. Spring, Summer, and Fall are far too beautiful to sit inside, dealing with boring things like piles of paper to be sorted or shredded, junk mail, books, magazines, clothing, and the Stuff I mentioned in Clearing the Clutter. [...]
