First Yoga Class

Date July 25, 2008

Today I woke up early, without an alarm, by seven o’clock. If any of my readers know me… they realize this is highly unusual. I believe my new schedule is going to change my life.

As a result of waking up early and having a four day work week, I was able to attend my first yoga class today. After researching yoga studios in the Binghamton, NY area, I came across Yoga Time, located in Johnson City.

The studio is on the second floor. It is very spacious, has plenty of natural light, and a welcoming atmosphere. The owner and main teacher is Paulette Placek. She has created a wonderful place for people to relax and exercise at the same time. She also is a very positive and fun person to interact with.

I found that yoga is the exercise of several aspects of life:

  • Physical: I participated in many stretches and movements that opened up the paths of energy in my body. I believe that continuing to do yoga over time will provide me with the aerobics and toning I have been seeking. Perhaps I won’t have to buy that gym membership after all. Supporting a small local business is a perk for being a patron of Yoga Time
  • Mental: I found yoga to be similar to my meditation practice. The deep breathing came very easily to me thanks to making meditation a part of my regular energy cleansing habit. We did some positions and exercises that were meant to balance the left and right hemisphere of the brain. I was a bit out of sync at first, but the movements made me aware of this, and I eventually had more control. It was a wonderful experience.
  • Spiritual: As a result of some of the chanting and breathing we did, I felt anxiety and negativity fall away from me. I felt surrounded by beautiful and powerful energy. This happens often when I meditate, but not on this level. I could feel it throughout the room. I encourage those who are interested in getting in touch with their inner selves to seek out a place to practice yoga. I plan to continue.
  • Overall Body Health: We do not exist in the physical realm without our bodies. My first yoga class helped me feel more flexible, energized, positive, and balanced. I believe yoga will fit right in to my project, life.
